As promised, here is the San Francisco public school’s first grade spelling test from 1870.  You didn’t read that wrong, it is FIRST GRADE.  And not just spelling, but definition of each word, prefix, root, and suffix.  This means that little Mabel or Johnny knew what dejection was, not to mention homicide.   -Wendy
